Live Location Sound

My experience in live location sound is still developing, but it has given me practical involvement across documentary, factual, educational, and commissioned filmed work. In most of these projects, I was responsible for recording production sound on location, with a focus on capturing clean, usable dialogue in real-world shooting environments.


I have worked on a range of commissioned projects, including filming for the NHS, where I recorded sound for conferences at Ewood Park Stadium and maternity information videos at Burnley Hospital. For the conferences, I captured dialogue from multiple live speakers in a large, well-attended room, liaising with venue staff to find the best method of recording for the film. For the maternity videos, I worked on a two-camera shoot in a confined hospital space, coordinating with the film crew to balance shot requirements with clean audio capture.


I have also recorded sound for independent and community-based projects, including PR Rap Unwrapped, where I provided production sound and additional editing and mix support; Avital Raz’s Unnatural Cycles, filmed at UCLAN’s Media Factory TV studio and Overleigh House; and student-led films with McKee College, where I recorded location sound and also contributed to overdubbing work at Soundskills Studio. On selected projects, I have additionally supported sound editing, mixing, and studio overdubbing, giving me a broader understanding of how production sound integrates with post-production.


Together, these projects show my ability to record reliable dialogue across different environments, from studio settings to large public events and confined spaces, while working closely with film crews and venue staff to deliver usable audio for edited content.

PR Rap Unwrapped 

May 2025

Project brief:  
To record production sound on location for PR Rap Unwrapped, a Documentary short film project, which required me to capture audio for interviews and associated content for the final release. This was commissioned and released as part of the Preston Jazz Fest.


Role:  
Sound Recordist, with additional sound edit and mix support.


What I did:  
I captured the main production sound on location using DJI Mic Mini systems, with two pairs of microphones used across the project. At Soundskills, all four mics were used together to record multiple voices and ensure clean, isolated dialogue capture where needed. For the outdoor interview with PR1, I used a single pair of the mics to suit the more mobile, location-based setup. I was responsible for making sure the recordings were clear, consistent, and usable for the edit, while also later contributing to parts of the sound edit and mix.


Outcome:  
The project was successfully captured as a filmed piece, with production sound recorded in both indoor and outdoor conditions. Using compact wireless microphones allowed for flexible setup, clean dialogue capture, and efficient location recording. My contribution across both recording and post-production support shows my ability to manage practical location sound tasks and follow through into the edit and mix stage. The documentary premiered live as part of the jazz festival.

NHS Conferences and Events 

2022 -2024
 

Project brief:
To record location sound for a Filmed NHS conference event at Ewood Park Stadium.


Role:  
Sound Recordist


What I did:  
I recorded clean production audio using a boom microphone and a Tascam two-input recorder for a large NHS event filmed in the conference rooms at Ewood Park. The event was well attended, with 300+ people in the room, and featured multiple live speakers presenting to the audience. My role was to capture the sound for the film rather than run the room audio, so I worked closely with venue staff and the wider crew to make sure the recording approach matched the space and the event setup.


Outcome:  
The audio was captured successfully for use alongside the film footage recorded by the rest of the crew. This shows experience working on a commissioned event in a live public setting, capturing usable dialogue in a busy room, and collaborating with both venue staff and production crew to achieve clean location sound.

Unnatural cycles

March 2023

Project brief:  
To record production sound for Unnatural Cycles, a filmed project shot at ULCANS Media Factory TV studio and at locations in Overleigh House, Preston. This was an independent short film commissioned by Avital Raz. 


Role:  
Sound Engineer / Sound Recordist


What I did:  
I captured location sound for the project across both studio and on-location environments. The filming required recording clean dialogue and usable production audio in different spaces, including the TV studio at ULCANS and multiple locations within Overleigh House. This meant adapting to changing room acoustics and Outdoor conditions, coordinating with the film crew, and ensuring the sound remained consistent throughout the shoot.


Outcome:  
The project was successfully filmed across multiple locations, with production sound captured to support the final edit. This demonstrates my ability to record reliable dialogue in different environments and to work flexibly within a film crew on a structured production.

NHs Information Videos

Febuary 2024

Project brief:  
To record production dialogue for a series of NHS maternity information videos filmed at Burnley Hospital.


Role:  
Sound Engineer


What I did:  
I captured the audio using a boom microphone and a Tascam two-input recorder as part of a two-camera shoot in the maternity ward. The filming took place in confined spaces, so I worked closely with the crew to balance shot requirements with clean dialogue capture. Because the series needed one room to appear as several different settings, we regularly changed camera positions and adapted the setup while maintaining consistent audio coverage.


Outcome:  
The videos were successfully recorded with clear dialogue in a restricted hospital environment. This showed my ability to work carefully in sensitive real-world settings, coordinate with a film crew during multi-camera production, and maintain usable production sound while the visual setup changed around me.
